Oil change stickers are a symptom of our day and time.
The mechanic doesn't look at them, we do.
It wasn't so long ago that service stations kept the rest rooms clean, checked the oil, looked at the tires, and washed windshields for us. Today most of them don't even put water out in what used to be home for the windshield scrubber. Consequently, many motorists now carry their own squirt bottle and paper towels.
More than ever these days we are forced to take responsibility for our own welfare. As a symbol that little oil change decal is always there, every time we get behind the wheel. And it greets us with an important question: “Hey is it time for service yet?”
Den Mother, Soccer Mom, or just plain old Professional Grocery Shopper - quite often our vehicles are the most important supporting cast members of our lives. Without dependable transportation, most of the good we now do would be impossible. The best way to keep our transportation dependable is with regular service - if nothing else it will let the old buggy know she is appreciated.
Oil stickers can also be a record unit that you had the car serviced regularly. Those reminders on the windshield are made of plastic and use the static-cling principle to hold them in place, which means there is no need to destroy them in order to remove them. Instead of throwing them away, ask your service partners to let you have them. Put them together in a small envelope or pouch so you can show them as proof of care, when you do put the car up for sale. Having these records close to hand can also trigger your memory at tax time to the point when significant events happened. “Now, WHY did I have two oil changes that month? Oh yes. That was when I took the Scouts to Yellowstone National Park.”
We don't think of the sticker as a piece of advertising. We see it as a favor to help remind US when it is time to have our oil gets changed. Yet it is a gentle, constant reminder of who we trust to service our car.
As a pure form of advertising the little oil change sticker performs better than all the advertising you see on television, and billboards don't even come close. We are already sold on the need for service and with the jiggling reminder of this little sticker to prompt us we can make sure we do schedule that service into our mesh of time constraints. Therefore, it pays the service company to press them on for free, and it pays us to give our attention to the device.
So, maybe the world is changing, but we can keep our standards higher than ever, thanks to the modest little oil sticker.
It really is important.
